Album Review: Scorched Oak – Perception
Scorched Oak – Smoking hot Stonerrock influenced by Heavyrock, Blues and Doom. The Dortmund based trio provides mesmerizing riffs, a throbbing bass and compelling drums. By combining haunting instrumental elements with Linda ́s distinctive singing and Ben ́s rough voice Scorched Oak’s audience awaits a blazing performance.
Perception is second Full-length album from the band. First full-length album “Withering Earth” was released on September 2020. Before that, they have released EP “2018” in November 2018.
This was my first “touch” to the band and i have to admit that it hit me like a hammer drill! If you like bands like Clutch, Monster Magnet and Black Rainbows, i advice to check this out. I hear some bits and pieces from these band combined with even more heavier riffing and more atmospheric soundscape! The album is like surfing with stoner, doom, Heavy, Blues and Desest Rock waves. Linda’s & Ben’s vocal combo fits together great.
Seven songs without a disappointment is rather good i think. The album starts with “Delusion” After a slow doomy riffing, it explode’s with Linda’s & Ben’s vocals and hard hitting drums by Freed. Song continue with groovy Doom Metal elements. (check video about Delusion below) “Mirrors” Continue’s with a bit lower tempo but maintain the Heavy, Doom soundscape with a bit of atmospheric elements. Followed by “Relief” with bit heavier, riffing with haunting sounds & vocals.
“Echoes” starts with Linda’s vocals, Linda,s voice is just stunning and “suits” perfectly with kind of slow doom and atmospheric song. “Reflection” on the otherhand starts much hevier but still continue with slow doom grooving road. Followed by the “Oracle” which has more psychedelic vibes but still maintain the same Doomy-Groovy rhythm.
The album end’s with the “Wizards” (bonus track) which is from the EP 2018, the heavy groove once again and it rules like a steam train forward, Ben’s vocals is damn great in this kind of groove songs. I’ve got the feeling that someone has mixed Monster Magnet & Motörhead!
Overall the album is solid Doom/Stoner Rock/Metal from start to finish combining slower atmospheric doom songs to heavier Heavy/Doom/Stoner kind of Metal songs. Strong contender for Album of the Year at least in our list!
